Preparation: 10 min · Cooking: 0 min · Total: 20 min · 4 servings
Ingredients
- 800 g shaved ice — Use ice made from safe drinking water.
- 120 g ube halaya — Use ready-to-eat ube halaya (purple-yam jam).
- 150 g ready-to-eat sweetened beans
- 100 g shredded coconut — Contains coconut.
- 200 ml sweetened condensed milk — Sweetened condensed milk; contains milk.
Instructions
Chill and prepare the toppings
Chill four serving glasses. Measure 120 g ready-to-eat ube halaya, 150 g ready-to-eat sweetened beans, 100 g shredded coconut, and 200 ml sweetened condensed milk. Keep the toppings chilled until assembly.
Build the chilled dessert
Divide the ube halaya, sweetened beans, and shredded coconut evenly among the four glasses. Add 200 g shaved ice to each glass, then pour 50 ml sweetened condensed milk over each. Assemble promptly so the ice stays firm.
The shaved ice is still firm and the layers are ready to mix at serving.
Build halo-halo: 600 seconds
Mix and serve
Mix the layers in each glass at the table and serve immediately, before the shaved ice melts.
Tips
- Chill the glasses before assembly so the shaved ice stays firm.
- Check the labels of prepared toppings for additional allergens; this recipe contains milk and coconut.
Common mistakes
- Using wet or partly melted ice makes the dessert watery.
- Leaving the assembled glasses at room temperature melts the ice and warms the dairy.
Substitutions
- Use ready-to-eat sweetened red beans if a mixed sweet-bean topping is unavailable.
Storage
Assemble just before serving; do not store the assembled dessert or save melted ice. Keep opened milk and prepared toppings refrigerated at 4°C or below, following package dates.
Reheating
Do not reheat; serve cold.
