Tips
- Spread butter right to the edges so the sprinkles stick; use clean utensils and a clean platter.
- Contains wheat and milk; check bread and sprinkle labels for other allergens. No heat or cooking is needed.
Common mistakes
- Cold butter can tear the soft bread.
- Leaving assembled bread out for hours makes it stale and delays safe storage.
Substitutions
- Use gluten-free white bread if needed, checking the bread and sprinkle labels for allergens.
Storage
Best fresh. Cover and refrigerate leftovers at 4°C or below within 2 hours; eat within 24 hours. Discard if left out longer.
Reheating
Do not reheat; serve chilled or let a portion briefly reach room temperature before eating.
About this recipe
Fairy bread is a familiar Australian children's birthday-party treat: buttered white bread coated in hundreds and thousands, usually cut into triangles. Sugar and vanilla in the butter are optional additions here, not part of the classic version.
